I am reading through the Bible in 90 Days, again. I love this study. It is so very powerful. It’s a method by which the reader can get a fast overview of the Bible as a whole. As I’ve been reading, of course, one of my all time favorite studies in the Bible, immediately and definitively arises. One of my 3 favorite studies has always been the Blood of Jesus.
We leap into the Word of God, and within a short time after humanity fell, we begin to see God’s plan of salvation unfolding. We begin to see “the Lamb of God who was slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8) being revealed to us. We see God desiring to show us a “new and living way…” which is paved “by the Blood of Jesus” (Hebrews 10:19-20).
One of my favorite Old Testament references to the amazing power of the Blood of Jesus is found in Exodus 29:19-20. Aaron and his sons are about to be commissioned as priests into the service of Almighty God. When they were being consecrated, a ram was sacrificed (a symbol of Jesus shedding His blood), and the blood was applied to Aaron and his son’s “right ears, right thumbs, and right big toes.” What a powerful image of what the Blood of Jesus does for us.
As Christians, we are a Kingdom of priests to God (Exodus 19:6, Revelation 1:6, and Revelation 5:10). Jesus is the High Priest who is our Aaron, and we are His sons, called to serve alongside of Him. Now, His precious blood has been applied to our ears, hands, and feet. What does that symbolize?
- Our Ears – Everything we allow into our ears needs to be filtered through the Blood of Jesus. As Children of God, we can’t afford to allow the lies of the enemy to permeate our souls; we can’t allow gossip into our souls. The Blood of Jesus, applied to our spiritual ears, will cause our ears to become sensitive to the Holy Spirit and closed to the lies of the enemy. Oh that we would allow the Blood to set our ears apart and only hear what Jesus is speaking to us. We need His loving Word, His words of direction, His words of affirmation, etc.
- Our Hands (Thumbs) – Everything we do, all of our actions are symbolized by the thumb here. We need to constantly remind ourselves that our lives are not our own anymore. We are priests for God and all of our actions are done by hands that are marked by the precious blood of the Lamb. What are we doing with our hands? Are we laying hands on the sick and seeing them recover? Are we lifting them in praise and worship? Are we using our hands for sinful behaviors? We’re priests to God, are our blood-marked hands demonstrating it?
- Our Feet (Big Toes) – Where are we going? Do we run to the House of the Lord? Do our lives reflect blood-marked feet that run to worship with other believers or do we behave as though we’re not marked by the Blood and go from one club to the next? Do we go from one meal to the next – living life as though it were meant for nothing more than eating and drinking? Our feet are marked by precious blood… we should be running to fellowship with the saints; we should be running to help the poor, to encourage the downcast, etc. Our feet are marked by the blood…does our vision reflect it? We should be running to the consecrated appointments God has for us.
Right now, if you would, pray this with me:
Lord Jesus, Your Blood sets me apart for your use. I am here. Sprinkle me with your precious Blood. Wash me again in the Blood that cleanses me from all sin and that separates me for your use. In Jesus Name. Amen.
